  YU Tik-man, Solomon
solomontyu@gmail.com

Solomon's works put viewers into a state of negotiation among the realms of visual, sign, reality and representation. He is concerned about the ways we construct, perceive, deny, and defend facts and values, identities and realities, and in extension, truths. Solomon keeps a wide range of materials as references that include historical archives, traditional press, new media journalism, social networking websites, marketing collaterals, everyday snapshots, and even porn. Primarily a painter, Solomon believes art is both personal and critical in helping our understanding and defining of self, and of our relationships with the rest.

Solomon's works

Raising, 2010
Oil on canvas

Negation : With the help of a simple computer imaging tool, I turn photographic images, e.g. press photos, snapshots, portrait photos, etc., into negative images before creating paintings of them. Sometimes I also add a positive figure within the picture. The subversion of light, colors, and forms accentuates our negotiation in reading the reality supposedly referred to by the original images.
